In a bold step to strengthen the delivery of quality education across the state, the Abia State Government has unveiled plans to recruit an additional 4,000 teachers to serve in public basic schools.

This initiative comes in response to the surge in student enrollment following the implementation of the state’s free and compulsory education policy.
Governor Alex Otti made this announcement during a dinner hosted in honour of former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Government House in Umuahia.
He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to providing access to education for every child, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Drawing from his own experience, Governor Otti emphasized the transformative power of public education in shaping his life.
The Governor noted that the influx of new pupils into public schools has created a pressing demand for more teaching personnel. To ensure standards are maintained, a special taskforce has been deployed to monitor teacher performance and student attendance across the state.

To further support school administration, Governor Otti approved an imprest of N100,000 for principals and headteachers, aimed at enhancing the smooth day-to-day operations of schools.

Former President Obasanjo commended Governor Otti’s leadership, describing him as a visionary committed to good governance. He urged the Governor to remain focused and called on Nigerian leaders to make the welfare of citizens a top priority in the fight against poverty.
Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, also praised Otti’s strides in governance and encouraged the people of Abia to continue supporting him, even looking ahead to a potential re-election in 2027.

The event drew the presence of top government officials, political leaders, and Local Government Mayors from across Abia State. Among them were Hon. Ginger Onwusibe and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who both lauded the remarkable progress being made under Governor Otti’s administration and expressed gratitude to former President Obasanjo for his continued support.
