Nigeria’s Super Falcons head coach, Justine Madugu, says he is deeply honoured and excited after being shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 Ballon d’Or awards.

Madugu, who recently guided the Falcons to a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco, was nominated in the Women’s Coach of the Year category. His star goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, also earned a spot in the Yachine Trophy shortlist, which celebrates the world’s best goalkeepers.

Speaking exclusively to Sport Resonance, Madugu described the recognition as not just personal, but a win for Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

“It feels great and I am honoured to be nominated for such a prestigious award. I’m delighted by the honour, privilege, respect, publicity and appreciation this brings to Nigeria and Africa,” he said.

The coach credited his success to hard work, dedication, and teamwork, acknowledging the contributions of the NFF President, General Secretary, board members, players, technical crew, and backroom staff.

“We thank God for this privilege. To our supporters in Nigeria, across Africa, and beyond – we cannot thank you enough for recognising our efforts.”

The Ballon d’Or, presented annually by France Football magazine, is one of football’s highest individual honours, celebrating the best players and coaches in the world. Madugu’s nomination marks a historic first for a Nigerian coach in the ‘Coach of the Year’ category.
