Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu. The development was confirmed on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who stated that the President had accepted Badaru’s decision and expressed gratitude for his service to the nation.
Sources within the Presidency indicate that President Tinubu is expected to notify the Senate of a nominee to succeed Badaru within the week.
Badaru, 63, previously served as a two-term governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.

His resignation comes at a time when President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency, with further details on the administration’s strategy expected to be announced soon.
