Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Spain, Ambassador Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PhD, has formally presented copies of his diplomatic credentials to the Spanish Government, marking the official commencement of his ambassadorial assignment in Madrid.

The ceremony was held at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Ambassador Ikpeazu submitted his credentials in accordance with established diplomatic protocol. The presentation serves as a key preliminary step before the formal presentation of his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, which will officially inaugurate his tenure as Nigeria’s ambassador to the European nation.

Ambassador Ikpeazu was accompanied by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Madrid, Ambassador Ferdinand Nwoye, and the Embassy’s Consul, Mrs. Binta Dala, M.C. The Nigerian delegation was received by Ambassador Adrián Martín Couce, who welcomed the envoy on behalf of the Spanish Government.

Speaking after the ceremony, Ambassador Ikpeazu described the occasion as the beginning of a new chapter in relations between Nigeria and Spain, expressing optimism that both countries would deepen cooperation in critical sectors.

He identified trade, investment, tourism, renewable energy, technology, education and cultural exchange as key areas where stronger bilateral collaboration could deliver mutual economic and developmental benefits.

“This marks the beginning of a renewed partnership between Nigeria and Spain. We look forward to deepening collaboration in areas that will deliver mutual benefits to both nations,” Ambassador Ikpeazu said.

The presentation of copies of credentials is a standard diplomatic procedure through which a newly appointed ambassador formally notifies the host country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs of their appointment and receives authorization to begin official diplomatic engagements. It precedes the formal presentation of the Letters of Credence to the Head of State, which signifies the full assumption of ambassadorial responsibilities.

With this diplomatic milestone completed, Ambassador Ikpeazu, the immediate past Governor of Abia State, is expected to commence high-level engagements with Spanish government officials, diplomatic partners and stakeholders while awaiting his audience with King Felipe VI, where he will formally present his Letters of Credence and fully assume his responsibilities as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain.
