Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the immediate payment of N1 million each to 31 verified Abia indigenes who recently returned from South Africa.
The state government said the intervention is intended to provide immediate relief to the returnees while assuring them that they have not been abandoned in their current circumstances.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the government is also conducting a comprehensive profiling of the beneficiaries to determine their individual circumstances and socio-economic needs.
The profiling, the government explained, will guide the development of appropriate interventions aimed at supporting the returnees’ sustainable reintegration and access to social protection programmes.
The administration described the gesture as part of Governor Otti’s commitment to protecting the dignity and welfare of vulnerable residents and Abia indigenes facing difficult circumstances.
The government further reaffirmed that Abia remains home to all its sons and daughters, regardless of where they live or the circumstances surrounding their return.
It said the intervention reflects the administration’s broader commitment to ensuring that vulnerable citizens have opportunities to recover, rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to society.
