Top African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his intention to run for Nigeria’s presidency in the 2027 general elections. Obi made the declaration while campaigning ahead of the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections in Abuja, signalling his readiness to contest as the principal ADC candidate.
The 64-year-old, who left the Labour Party for the ADC at the end of 2025, has been actively consulting within his new party platform as he builds momentum toward the 2027 polls. His supporters, known as the “Obidient Movement,” have been pressing for his nomination as the party’s flagbearer, urging unity and mass mobilisation for his bid.

In a video seen by news outlets, Obi stressed the importance of grassroots support, linking the forthcoming local council election outcomes to his broader presidential ambitions. He assured followers that his involvement in the ADC would centre on securing the party’s presidential ticket and delivering victory in 2027.
Obi’s announcement comes amid wider opposition efforts to strengthen political alliances within and beyond the ADC, as other key figures within the party also position themselves for the race. This reflects ongoing negotiations and strategy shaping within Nigeria’s multi-party landscape ahead of the next general election.
His 2027 bid follows his third-place finish in the 2023 presidential election, and he has since cultivated a strong base among younger voters and political activists keen on challenging the status quo and addressing issues like insecurity and economic hardship.
