The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Christian Chukwu, former captain of the Green Eagles, Nigeria’s senior national football team.
Chukwu, a revered figure in Nigerian sports, passed away recently, prompting tributes from across the country.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Senator Akpabio described the late Chukwu as a pioneering footballer whose legacy transcends generations.
“We mourn the loss of a Nigerian football icon, Christian Chukwu,” Akpabio stated. “As a pioneering defender and former Green Eagles captain, he etched his name in the annals of Nigerian football history. His leadership, skill, and dedication inspired countless fans and paved the way for future generations.”
Senator Akpabio highlighted Chukwu’s vital role in shaping Nigeria’s football identity both locally and internationally, noting that his achievements on the field were matched only by his humility and service to the sport after retirement.
“I am deeply saddened by his passing. He was a legendary figure in Nigerian football, and his contributions to the sport are immeasurable,” Akpabio added.
On behalf of the Nigerian Senate, he extended his heartfelt condolences to the Chukwu family, friends, and the entire football community.
“May God grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss. May Christian Chukwu’s soul rest in perfect peace.”

Christian Chukwu, fondly remembered for captaining the Green Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers. His legacy continues to inspire athletes across the continent.
