A Sokoto State High Court has sentenced three men, including a Nigerien national, to death by hanging after finding them guilty of terrorism and arms proliferation offences.

The convicts, identified as Yusuf Muhammad, also known as Sallau, a Nigerien citizen, alongside Jabbi Alhaji Yalle and Kabiru Muhammad, were arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) Counter-Terrorism Unit over their alleged involvement in cross-border crimes, arms trafficking, and terrorism activities.

Delivering judgment, Justice Bello found the three defendants guilty on all counts and sentenced them to death by hanging. The court also ordered the forfeiture of proceeds linked to their criminal activities to the Federal Government.

The case is among a series of recent prosecutions targeting terrorism-related offences as authorities intensify efforts to combat insecurity, terrorism financing, and the proliferation of illegal arms across the country.

Security experts have repeatedly warned that cross-border crimes and the movement of illegal weapons continue to pose serious threats to national security, particularly in northern Nigeria and border communities.

The judgment underscores the government’s commitment to prosecuting terrorism-related offences and strengthening measures aimed at curbing insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violent crime.
