Nigeria’s Super Eagles were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein.

The game kicked off with intensity, but disaster struck for Nigeria in the 25th minute when captain William Troost-Ekong inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while trying to clear a dangerous cross. The unfortunate moment sent the home supporters into loud celebrations and handed the hosts an early advantage.

Nigeria, however, showed resilience and found a lifeline just before halftime. In the 45th minute, defender Calvin Bassey climbed highest to meet a cross and powered home a header, bringing the Super Eagles back on level terms.

The second half turned into a tactical battle, with both sides pushing for a winner. South Africa’s defense held firm under pressure, while Nigeria’s forwards struggled to find the decisive touch in the closing stages.

At full time, neither side could break the deadlock. The result leaves South Africa top of Group C with 17 points—six ahead of Nigeria, who remain in second place on 11 points.

For the Super Eagles, the road to the 2026 World Cup is becoming increasingly uncertain.
