The Supreme Court of Nigeria is set to hear a series of high-stakes appeals on Tuesday stemming from deepening leadership crises within the African Democratic Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, in a development that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At the centre of the ADC dispute is David Mark, a former Senate President, who is challenging a Court of Appeal judgment affecting his position as the party’s national chairman. He is seeking an order to stay execution of the ruling and restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising any rival leadership pending the determination of his appeal.

The crisis escalated after INEC removed Mark and other party officials from its records following the appellate court decision, prompting urgent legal action to restore the existing leadership structure.
Parallel to this, a faction within the PDP led by Tanimu Turaki is contesting earlier court rulings that nullified its national convention and leadership framework. The group argues that allowing the judgments to stand could destabilise the party and undermine its preparedness for upcoming elections.
The appeals three in total arise from conflicting decisions of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal in Abuja, with all parties now seeking a definitive interpretation from the apex court.
Legal analysts note that the Supreme Court’s verdict will not only determine the legitimacy of the competing leadership factions but could also influence alliances, candidate selection, and overall opposition strength ahead of 2027.
