The Abia State Government has addressed allegations surrounding the payment of pensions, countering claims made by the leadership of the state’s chapter of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP). Speaking to journalists, Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu provided clarity on the government’s position and efforts to ensure regular pension payments.
Kanu highlighted that the previous administration had left significant arrears of pensions unpaid, but the Dr. Alex Otti-led government prioritized resolving these legacy debts. “When we assumed office, we inherited a substantial pension liability. However, the governor made it a priority to clear these arrears and ensure pensioners are paid regularly,” Kanu said.
He revealed that a substantial sum of 10 billion Naira was earmarked specifically to clear the pension debts. “The pensioners were pleased with the decision and even suggested that the focus should be on maintaining regular monthly payments rather than further debt servicing,” Kanu explained.
Despite these efforts, Kanu expressed surprise over subsequent claims by pensioners’ leaders alleging outstanding arrears. “After these payments, we were shocked to hear accusations that the government was still indebted to pensioners,” he noted.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, also weighed in, emphasizing Governor Otti’s commitment to pensioner welfare. “Governor Otti has a history of engaging positively with pensioners, even during his time in opposition. His administration has always prioritized their welfare,” Ekeoma said.
Ekeoma further clarified misconceptions about the payment of arrears, dismissing claims that only partial payments were made. “The insinuation that the government paid only half of nine months’ arrears is false. The government has been transparent and diligent in addressing pension-related issues,” he stated.
Both Kanu and Ekeoma criticized the NUP leadership for what they described as a lack of genuine advocacy for its members. “It is disappointing that the union leadership has not worked sincerely for the welfare of its members,” Ekeoma remarked.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a healthy relationship with pensioners and ensuring that their entitlements are paid promptly and in full.
