In a significant update from the Abia State Executive Council, the Ministry of Information has announced major strides in public transportation, youth empowerment, and inclusive development under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti.
Electric Bus Fleet Expansion and Transport Sector Reforms
As part of an ambitious modernization agenda, Abia State has doubled its planned electric bus procurement from 20 to 40 units, along with an increase in charging stations from 10 to 20. According to the government’s progress report, the first batch of 20 electric buses will arrive in November. Of these, 12 will be deployed in Aba and 8 in Umuahia, with additional buses expected to serve key regions such as the Ohafia–Bende corridor.
This expansion supports a broader transport reform package that includes the construction of world-class bus terminals in Aba and Umuahia, strategic junction improvements, and the installation of modern bus shelters across the state. These initiatives reflect the Otti administration’s commitment to providing efficient, eco-friendly, and accessible urban mobility.
Youth Empowerment Initiatives Gain Global Support
On the youth empowerment front, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, in partnership with Ethnocentriq Ltd., has enrolled 1,200 young people in the second cohort of the Fashion Future Skills Acquisition Programme. This programme focuses on garment and leather work and is backed by approximately $3 million in funding from the MasterCard Foundation. The sizeable investment underscores growing investor confidence in Abia State as a hub for skills development and entrepreneurship.
Additionally, the Abia State Creative Talent Hunt has been launched to identify and support promising young talents, particularly in music and innovation. This initiative is a joint effort between the Ministries of Youth & Sports Development and Arts, Culture & Creative Economy, aimed at boosting the state’s creative industries.
Upcoming International Youth Day and Sports Inclusion Efforts
Preparations are underway for the 2025 International Youth Day celebration, scheduled for August 6–12. Planned activities include a Youth Assembly, symposiums, and interstate youth exchange visits designed to foster engagement, learning, and unity among young people across Nigeria.

In a move towards inclusive sports development, the state has procured a wheelchair-accessible bus to support physically challenged athletes. This ensures their full participation in the International Sports Championship taking place from September 3 to October 12, 2025.
Recognition of Homegrown Sporting Talent
The state also plans to formally host and celebrate the Abia-born Falconets who recently returned from successful stints with their European clubs.
The press briefing, held at Government House in Umuahia, was led by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, alongside the Commissioners for Youth and Sports Development and Arts, Culture & Creative Economy, as well as key media aides to the Governor.
These initiatives signal a dynamic and forward-looking approach by the Abia State Government to infrastructure, human capital, and social inclusion, reflecting a renewed vision for the state’s development.
