Beyond Okada and Grinding Machines: Ben Kalu Exemplifies What Real Empowerment Looks Like in Bende – By Charles Thomas

There is a photograph making the rounds from Abuja this week that deserves more attention than a passing scroll. It shows a group of young men and women from Bende Federal Constituency indigenes who, through the intervention of Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, secured jobs in federal government ministries and parastatals. They came to say thank you. I think the rest of us should be paying attention too.

For too long, “empowerment” in Nigerian political language has meant a wheelbarrow, a grinding machine, an okada, even cassava stem or a small cash handover gestures that photograph well but rarely change a family’s trajectory.

What is happening in Bende looks totally different. According to those close to the process, the group photographed in Abuja is just one cohort among several with counterparts said to be in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Enugu, and Ebonyi, all Bende indigenes placed in federal roles. According to reports well over a hundred and forty appointments, this is not a gift basket, a hamper as we see amongst many Nigerian politicians but this is a pipeline.

Why this matters more than it looks

Pay close attention to the arithmetic, because it is worth sitting with. A federal appointment is not a one-off transfer; it is a monthly income, a pension trajectory, an entry point into a career ladder that can run for decades. Multiply that by the number of young Bende indigenes that have been placed, and you are not looking at a photo-op, you are looking at the early architecture of a constituency’s middle class. Give it ten years of retention, promotion, and mentorship, and it is entirely plausible that Bende sons and daughters will be sitting as directors across federal ministries and agencies, not because of luck, but because someone opened the door at the entry level.

This is my argument and that of numerous other supporters of Ben Kalu, and it is a serious one: that human capital development, placing people inside institutions where they can rise, outlasts any market stall or okada handed out for a news cycle. It is empowerment with compound interest.

A leader judged by intention, not noise

Whatever one thinks of Nigerian politics generally, there is something to be said for a lawmaker who appears to be building for outcomes a decade away rather than for applause this weekend. If the standard for 2027 and beyond is simple, does this person actually expand what is possible for the people who sent them to Abuja? then this is the kind of evidence voters should be asking every representative to produce, not just Bende’s.

Hon Ben Kalu, Bende is currently offering the rest of the country a template worth studying: that the most durable form of political empowerment is not the tool you hand someone for a day, but the door you open for a career.
