A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the remand of human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The order was issued by Justice Mohammed Umar following the dismissal of Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case over allegations of bias.

The court directed that Sowore remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of his application seeking a stay of the earlier order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued for his arrest.

Justice Umar subsequently adjourned the matter to June 24, 2026, for the hearing of the application filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika.

The court had earlier revoked Sowore’s bail after he failed to appear at a previous court session, a development that also led to the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest.

Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations relating to statements he made on social media concerning President Bola Tinubu.

At Monday’s proceedings, his legal team urged the court to set aside the order revoking his bail, arguing that his previous absence from court resulted from consultations with his new legal counsel.

However, the court declined the request for the presiding judge to withdraw from the case and ordered that Sowore be remanded pending the determination of his application.

The case has continued to attract widespread public attention as proceedings move to the next hearing scheduled for June 24.
