A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending a ruling on his application seeking relief from the court’s earlier decision revoking his bail.

The court’s decision followed proceedings in which Sowore’s legal team sought to overturn the order that revoked his bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for an earlier court session.

Presiding Judge, Justice Mohammed Umar, directed that Sowore remain in custody while the court considers the application challenging the bail revocation. The judge also dismissed an application seeking his recusal from the case over allegations of bias.

Sowore, who is facing charges linked to social media publications, appeared before the court accompanied by his legal representatives. His new counsel argued that there were circumstances surrounding his absence from the previous court sitting and urged the court to reconsider its earlier order.

The prosecution opposed the application, maintaining that the trial should proceed in accordance with the court’s previous rulings.

Following arguments from both sides, the court adjourned proceedings and fixed June 30 for its ruling on the pending application. Until then, Sowore is expected to remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The case has continued to attract public attention, with supporters and critics closely monitoring developments surrounding the activist’s trial and detention.

Meanwhile, rights groups and civil society organisations have renewed calls for due process and adherence to constitutional guarantees as the legal proceedings continue.
