The Owerri Archdiocesan Catholic Secretariat has confirmed the release of Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, the Parish Priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, Izombe, who was abducted on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

In an official statement released early Thursday morning, Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbara, the Archdiocesan Chancellor/Secretary, announced that Fr. Ubaechu regained his freedom on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

Details of the Abduction and Release

Fr. Ubaechu was kidnapped at Ejemekuru while traveling to Owerri for the annual retreat of Catholic priests from the Owerri Archdiocese. Reports indicated that his abductors initially demanded a ₦20 million ransom for his release, though the statement from the Archdiocese did not disclose whether a ransom was paid.

The statement, titled “Notification on the Release of Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu,” read in part:

“I am directed to inform you that our priest, Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, who was kidnapped on Sunday, March 23, 2025, has been released. He regained his freedom from his abductors today, March 26, 2025. We thank God for His infinite mercy and for answering our prayers. We appreciate your fraternal solidarity and prayers. To God be the glory.”

Calls for Improved Security in the Area

Reacting to the news, a parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church, identified simply as Okey, expressed gratitude for Fr. Ubaechu’s release but raised concerns about the growing insecurity in the Ejemekuru axis of the Izombe/Ogbaku road.

“We thank God for the release of Fr. Ubaechu. However, we urge the Imo State Government and security agencies to take decisive action against the rising wave of violent crimes in this area.”

Okey recalled that Fr. Mathias Opara was also kidnapped on May 26, 2023, at the same location after attending a burial in Izombe. He noted that multiple cases of kidnappings and armed robbery have been reported around the same spot, suggesting that criminals have established escape routes in the area.

“To prevent further attacks, authorities should establish a security checkpoint along this road,” he added.

As insecurity continues to pose a major threat in parts of Imo State, residents and religious leaders are calling for urgent government intervention to restore peace and ensure the safety of travelers and residents.
