Nigeria has emerged champions of the women’s category at the African Wrestling Championships, securing a historic 15th title after a commanding performance in Alexandria, Egypt.
Team Nigeria clinched the title with an impressive haul of eight gold and two silver medals, finishing top of the standings and reaffirming its dominance on the continent.
The championship, which began on April 27, saw Nigerian wrestlers compete across multiple weight categories, delivering consistent victories to seal the overall win.
In individual performances, standout athletes such as Christianah Ogunsanya and Esther Kolawole contributed to the gold medal tally, showcasing Nigeria’s depth and technical superiority in women’s wrestling.
Despite strong competition from host nation Egypt and other African countries, Nigeria maintained its edge throughout the tournament, winning the majority of available medals in the women’s division.
The men’s team also delivered a commendable performance, finishing third overall to secure a podium place and add to Nigeria’s overall success at the championship.
The latest triumph further cements Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in African wrestling, particularly in the women’s category, where it has consistently dominated for years.
Sports analysts say the victory highlights the country’s sustained investment in wrestling development and its ability to produce world-class athletes capable of excelling on the continental stage.
With this achievement, Nigeria continues its remarkable run in African wrestling, setting the pace for future competitions and strengthening its prospects ahead of global tournaments.
