The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the aborted Port Harcourt–Aba train service, attributing the disruption to a technical fault.
In a statement released on Monday, NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, confirmed that all passengers affected by the incident would be refunded.
The train broke down on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Imo River while en route from Aba to Port Harcourt. Despite efforts by NRC engineers to restart the locomotive, the fault persisted. An alternative engine, Loco 2306, was eventually deployed to rescue the stranded train. Some passengers opted to continue their journey through alternative means, while others were safely conveyed back.
Videos of stranded commuters trekking long distances and crossing streams had earlier circulated on social media, prompting public concern and criticism.
Dr. Opeifa assured passengers that the faulty train has since been returned to Port Harcourt for comprehensive repairs to restore full service. He advised affected passengers to visit NRC stations in Port Harcourt or Aba with proof of payment to claim a refund or receive a replacement ticket.
Reiterating the corporation’s commitment to improved service delivery, the NRC stated:

“The present NRC management remains committed to transforming the corporation under the Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring safer, more reliable, and customer-friendly rail services across the country.”
Normal operations on the Port Harcourt–Aba corridor are expected to resume on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
