Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and his Kano State counterpart Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have formally joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The two political heavyweights were presented with their membership cards in Abuja following a closed-door meeting with party leaders, in a move widely seen as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate opposition forces.

Both leaders had recently exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid internal crises and strategic realignments within the opposition bloc.

They were formally welcomed into the NDC by former Bayelsa State governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, who currently serves as the party’s national leader.

Footage and reports from the event showed the two politicians receiving their membership cards in the presence of party faithful and supporters, signaling their official entry into the party.

The development comes amid intensified political maneuvering among opposition figures seeking a viable platform to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 elections.

Analysts say the defection of Obi and Kwankwaso could significantly reshape the opposition landscape, potentially paving the way for a unified front or coalition ahead of the next presidential race.
