When Chief (Pastor) Ralph Egbu, former Secretary to the Abia State Government (SSG), announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and formal entry into the Labour Party (LP) in August 2025, it marked another high-profile realignment in Abia politics. At a colourful reception in Ukwa West on Friday, he was welcomed alongside other political figures and supporters by Governor Alex Otti’s team alongside another former PDP stalwart, the immediate past deputy Governor Rt Hon Ude Okochukwu. The defection has since sparked debate: was it a move inspired by genuine constituency pressure, or a calculated bid to stay relevant in the evolving political order?

Egbu is no stranger to the corridors of power. A veteran journalist, he once served as Chief Press Secretary, later Commissioner for Information, and eventually Abia’s SSG under previous administrations. His long career straddling both media and governance earned him a reputation as a skilled communicator and strategist. He also remained active in civic conversations, speaking on governance and press freedom at national forums such as World Press Freedom Day in 2021.

At his declaration, Egbu presented the shift as less about personal ambition and more about duty. According to him, his constituents in Ukwa West directed him to align with Governor Otti, whose governance style they considered more credible. He described his move as fulfilling a communal mandate rather than seeking political survival.
“The decision was not mine alone; it was taken with my people,” he insisted.
Still, the timing raises questions. Governor Otti’s popularity and infrastructural push have drawn many defectors to the LP in recent months most especially from the opposition party PDP. For critics, Egbu’s switch represents a familiar pattern in Nigerian politics: aligning with the ruling structure to safeguard relevance, influence, and potential patronage. Supporters, however, view it as pragmatic, an elder statesman recognizing momentum and aligning for the good of his community.
Another angle is his media background. Having once controlled the state’s information machinery, his new loyalty could strengthen Otti’s communication arm ahead of 2027. Yet, it also risks reinforcing skepticism that seasoned political communicators often reinvent themselves not for ideology but for expediency.
Constituency duty vs. political calculation
The truth may lie in the middle. Egbu’s long-standing networks in Ukwa West likely pressured him to move with the tide, especially as the PDP’s influence wanes in Abia. At the same time, his career trajectory suggests an instinct for survival within shifting political currents. His own words emphasize collective duty; his timing suggests strategic positioning.

Egbu’s defection adds symbolic weight to the LP’s consolidation in Abia, especially in Ukwa West where he retains grassroots ties. For Governor Otti, it bolsters credibility that prominent old-guard figures are crossing over. For Egbu, it provides renewed relevance ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Whether this decision is judged in history as an act of service or political self-preservation will depend less on speeches and more on outcomes, what tangible benefits his people in Ukwa West actually see from his new alignment.
