Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, has died.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his passing on Thursday through a statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai — a true giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.
Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”

Affectionately known as Dodo Mayana, Rufai earned 65 caps for Nigeria and was a key figure in the country’s golden generation. He helped the national team secure its second AFCON title in Tunisia in 1994.

Rufai also represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup tournaments, cementing his place as one of the nation’s most iconic footballers.
