US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greet Britain’s King Charles III and Britain’s Queen Camilla

Britain’s King Charles III has met United States President Donald Trump in Washington during a high-profile state visit aimed at repairing recent strains in UK-US relations.

The four-day trip is regarded as one of the most significant diplomatic missions of Charles’ reign and comes amid disagreements between both allies over foreign policy, trade matters, and the recent conflict involving Iran.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were welcomed by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the White House, where the leaders held private talks and a ceremonial meeting. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the visit would honour the “long-standing and special relationship” between the United States and Britain.

The visit also coincides with celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, adding historic symbolism to the royal engagement.

During the trip, King Charles is expected to address the US Congress, becoming only the second British monarch after Queen Elizabeth II to do so. Analysts say the British government is relying on the monarchy’s soft diplomatic influence to ease tensions with Trump after recent disagreements with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration.

The visit proceeds despite heightened security concerns following a recent shooting incident in Washington, with Buckingham Palace confirming the programme would continue after consultations with US authorities.

Observers believe the success of the trip could play an important role in stabilising one of the world’s most important bilateral alliances at a time of global uncertainty.
