In a recent address, the Abia State Government has issued a stern warning against the spread of false information, making it clear that individuals or groups found guilty of violating the Cyber Security Act and Data Protection Act will face prosecution. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, chaired by Governor Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.
Prince Kanu emphasized the administration’s intolerance for the deliberate dissemination of misinformation, especially when cloaked under the guise of political opposition. He underscored the dangers of misleading the public with falsehoods, stating, “This is to inform those who peddle falsehood all in the name of opposition that time has come for them to desist from such unwholesome acts or be ready to face the full wrath of the law.”
The government remains committed to transparency but urges citizens to exercise caution before sharing information. Prince Kanu highlighted the potential consequences of reckless dissemination of fake news, which can lead to public disorder and unnecessary panic. He stated, “Such people need to be reminded of the Cyber Laws in our legal system, Cyber Security Act, the Data Protection Act, all part of our legal system.”
While affirming that the current administration has nothing to hide, Prince Kanu pointed out that spreading falsehoods infringes upon the rights of others. He warned, “The people that engage in acts of misinformation should understand that it has the capacity to cause mischief and chaos among the public. It is important for such people to note that this State Government reserves the right to prosecute them if they run foul of the law.”
Furthermore, the Commissioner reiterated that both the Cyber Security Act and Data Protection Act are legally binding in Nigeria. He stressed the seriousness of spreading falsehoods, asserting, “Spreading falsehood is not a harmless act but a serious offense that violates the rights of others and threatens public order.”
With this strong stance, the Abia State Government has put potential violators on notice. The Otti-led administration is reaffirming its commitment to accountability, responsible governance, and fostering a well-informed society. Citizens are encouraged to embrace ethical communication practices and contribute positively to the stability and progress of Abia State.

As Prince Kanu concluded, “We believe in transparency and open communication, but we cannot tolerate actions that threaten the peace and stability of our state. Let this serve as a reminder that the law will take its course against those who choose to disregard it.”
This message serves as a call to action for all residents to verify information and promote truthfulness in their interactions, ensuring a harmonious and informed community.
