In a significant development, the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, has successfully secured the commitment of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) to reopen all sections of Ariaria International Market, Eziukwu Market, and Tenant Road Drug Market that were previously sealed. These markets had been investigated over allegations of involvement in the production and sale of adulterated, expired, and counterfeit drugs and other consumable products.
Following extensive discussions and engagements with NAFDAC authorities at the highest level, Governor Otti ensured that only those sections of the markets found not guilty of these illicit activities will be reopened. The unsealing exercise is scheduled to take place on February 26, 2025, under the supervision of the NAFDAC Director for the South-East Zone.

However, it is important to note that shops implicated in these unethical practices will remain sealed until the perpetrators are brought to justice or appropriate legal action is taken against them. The Abia State Government strongly condemns the production and sale of harmful substances disguised as legitimate business operations.
Governor Otti’s administration remains committed to partnering with NAFDAC to ensure that Abia State is entirely free from fake, adulterated, and expired drugs, as well as other dangerous consumables. The government will continue to support efforts aimed at arresting and prosecuting those involved in such criminal activities, ensuring that they face the full weight of the law.

According a release by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor of Abia State Ctz. UKOHA NJOKU UKOHA the initiative underscores the Abia State Government’s dedication to safeguarding public health and welfare by maintaining high standards of quality control in the sale of pharmaceuticals and other consumer goods.
