Alhaji Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his post as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

In a letter dated March 2, 2026, addressed to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Mr. Atiku formally notified the governor of his decision to leave the state executive council, effective immediately. He cited “deep personal reflection and careful consideration” as the basis for his resignation.

“It has been a rare honour and privilege to serve under your visionary leadership and contribute to the infrastructural growth and development of our dear state,” Mr. Atiku wrote in the letter, expressing gratitude to the governor, state residents, and his family for their support during his tenure.

Mr. Atiku’s departure comes shortly after Governor Fintiri’s high-profile defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last week, a move that saw most members of the cabinet follow the governor into the ruling party.

Unlike the majority of his colleagues, Mr. Atiku was absent from the official ceremony at the Government House where the governor’s defection was publicly announced. Reports say he and a handful of others did not join in the political transition before submitting his resignation.

Political analysts say the resignation of a prominent figure such as Mr. Atiku, also known for his family ties and political influence, is likely to attract attention as the state navigates shifting party loyalties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
