Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will convene an emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday amid a growing internal crisis triggered by a spate of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP, Nigeria’s leading opposition party, has in recent weeks suffered major setbacks with the defection of prominent figures. On April 23, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP political structure in the state formally announced their move to the APC.
Their decision came shortly after a PDP governors’ meeting in Ibadan, where the governors signaled readiness for broader political alliances but dissociated themselves from coalition talks reportedly championed by former presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
In a further blow to the party, all three PDP senators from Kebbi State are reportedly on the verge of defecting to the APC, raising fresh concerns about the party’s cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sunday’s emergency meeting, scheduled to hold at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro area of Abuja, is expected to focus on strategies to stem the ongoing wave of defections. T
he governors will also deliberate on preparations for the party’s forthcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting slated for May 27, as efforts intensify to stabilize the PDP and reassert its political relevance.
