Senator Natasha Pleads Not Guilty to Defamation Charges, Granted ₦50m Bail
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of alleged criminal defamation brought against her by the Federal Government. The charges relate to comments she allegedly made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, accusing them of plotting to assassinate her.
Justice Chizoba Orji of the FCT High Court granted the senator ₦50 million bail with one surety who must own landed property in Abuja and be a responsible resident of the capital. The court adjourned the matter to September 23, 2025, for trial. The courtroom was heavily secured and witnessed the presence of her husband, former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili, activist Aisha Yesufu, and supporters.

The prosecution alleges that Akpoti-Uduaghan made damaging imputations in a TV interview and phone call, knowingly intending to harm the reputations of Akpabio and Bello. The offences are said to contravene Sections 391 and 392 of the Penal Code. Both Akpabio and Bello are listed as witnesses in the trial.
