Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, met with U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills in Abuja on Wednesday to discuss the recent changes to U.S. visa policies for Nigerian nationals.
The meeting, also attended by Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Comptroller-General Kemi Nanna Nandap and the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani, focused on enhancing cooperation between both nations on immigration matters.
According to a statement from the minister, the discussions were constructive, with the U.S. envoy providing insights into the revised visa protocol aimed at maintaining the integrity of the process.

The U.S. ambassador also commended Nigeria’s new e-visa system, calling it a forward-thinking move to streamline travel procedures for foreign visitors.

Both parties agreed to strengthen collaboration on key areas including:
• Strict adherence to visa regulations
• Reduction of visa overstays by Nigerian travellers
• Improved security checks and verified identity for travel documents
• Information sharing on criminal and security records to enhance public safety
This comes a day after the U.S. embassy in Nigeria announced a significant change to its visa policy, reducing most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visa validity periods to three months and limiting them to single entry.
