Canada Deports 205 Nigerians as Immigration Crackdown Intensifies

Canadian immigration authorities have deported 205 Nigerian nationals as part of a broader enforcement drive that saw 10,607 people removed from the country during the first half of 2026, according to official statistics released by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). 

The figures show that Nigerians ranked among the top 10 nationalities removed from Canada during the period, accounting for nearly two per cent of all deportations carried out between January and June 2026. 

According to the CBSA, Indian nationals recorded the highest number of deportations with 3,323, followed by Mexicans (1,573), Haitians (431), Americans (372), Colombians (354), Romanians (293), Bangladeshis (227), Pakistanis (207), and Nigerians (205). Chile rounded out the top 10 with 190 deportations. 

The agency said the removals form part of Canada’s ongoing efforts to enforce immigration laws and preserve the integrity of its immigration system.

“Removing individuals who do not have the right to enter or stay in Canada is essential to maintaining the integrity of Canada’s immigration program and ensuring fairness for those who come to this country lawfully,” the CBSA stated. 

The latest figures indicate that Canada has continued to strengthen immigration enforcement following an increase in deportations over recent years. Official records show that 438 Nigerians were deported during the 2025 calendar year, while the number removed in the first six months of 2026 stood at 205. 

The CBSA also disclosed that, as of June 30, 2026, 1,647 Nigerians were listed in its “removals in progress” inventory, meaning they could face deportation pending the completion of immigration procedures. 

Canada remains one of the preferred destinations for many Nigerians seeking educational, employment, and economic opportunities. However, immigration authorities have maintained that individuals who violate immigration laws or lose their legal status may be subject to removal in accordance with Canadian regulations.

The deportation data comes amid increased scrutiny of immigration policies in Canada as authorities continue efforts to address backlogs, strengthen border security, and enforce compliance with immigration laws.

Officials have reiterated that Canada’s immigration system continues to welcome eligible immigrants, international students, skilled workers, and refugees who meet the country’s legal requirements, while enforcing removal orders against those found to be without legal status.
