The Abia State Commissioner for Information and leader of the Labour Party in Ukwa East, Prince Okey Kanu, has expressed deep concern over the crisis that erupted among councillors of the Ukwa East Legislative Council on Tuesday, 25 November 2025.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kanu described the disagreement which escalated into unrest and the destruction of government property as “disturbing” and “unacceptable,” condemning all forms of violence, intimidation, and misconduct that could tarnish the image of Ukwa East Local Government or the Labour Party.
Kanu emphasized that while disagreements and robust debates are expected in any legislative setting, such differences must never degenerate into confrontation or actions that undermine democratic institutions.
“As leaders and stakeholders, we have a collective responsibility to uphold peace, discipline, and respect for democratic processes,” he said, stressing the need for reconciliation and cooperation in the interest of the people of Ukwa East.
He appealed to councillors, party members, and supporters to maintain calm and avoid statements or actions that might escalate the tension. According to him, the Labour Party leadership in Ukwa East, working with relevant authorities, has already begun engaging with all parties involved to determine the cause of the incident and restore peace in the council.
Reassuring residents, Kanu stated that the unity and progress of the local government remain paramount. He warned that division benefits no one and urged stakeholders not to allow temporary disagreements to derail the shared vision for Ukwa East.

“Together, we will strengthen peace, rebuild trust, and ensure that Ukwa East continues to stand as a model of responsible leadership and democratic maturity,” the statement concluded.
