The United States government is considering a major review of its financial aid and humanitarian assistance to Nigeria amid growing concerns over insecurity and religious violence across the country.
The move follows recommendations by the US House Committee on Appropriations, which proposed placing stricter conditions on aid to Nigeria, including a potential 50 percent cut in funding if security benchmarks are not met.
According to the proposal, future disbursements to the Nigerian government would be tied to measurable actions such as preventing violence, holding perpetrators accountable, supporting victims, and facilitating the safe return of displaced communities.
The proposed legislation part of the National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Bill for 2027 could significantly reduce billions of dollars earmarked for Nigeria’s development and humanitarian programmes if passed into law.
US lawmakers expressed deep concern over persistent insecurity, particularly attacks linked to religious violence, describing the situation as alarming and requiring urgent action by Nigerian authorities.

The bill also introduces stricter oversight measures, including requiring Nigerian authorities to match US funding contributions and comply with congressional notification procedures before accessing aid.
Despite the proposed restrictions, part of the funding is expected to be redirected toward addressing violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, including support for security sector programmes and humanitarian interventions.
The development signals a shift in US foreign policy toward Nigeria, with greater emphasis on accountability, religious freedom, and measurable progress in tackling insecurity before continued financial support can be guaranteed.
