On Thursday, a team of health officers from the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Umuahia zone, stormed Cameroon Street in Umuahia as part of a house-to-house sanitation inspection aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment across Abia State’s 17 Local Government Areas.

The exercise, which is part of a comprehensive sanitation campaign launched by the state government in August, seeks to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, improve waste management practices, and tackle health hazards caused by poor hygiene in residential areas.
According to the Ministry of Environment, which is spearheading the initiative, the inspections will cover drainage systems, waste disposal methods, and general cleanliness in households across the state.
During Thursday’s inspection, several houses in and around Cameroon Street were identified as constituting public and health nuisances. As a result, abatement notices were issued to affected property owners and tenants, directing them to urgently address sanitation lapses.

One of the compounds served with a notice was located at 32 Cameroon Street, Umuahia. The official Notice as seen by NATIONAL CONCORD, was signed by ASEPA’s Chief Abatement Officer,
ASEPA officials explained that the enforcement action was not punitive but corrective, stressing that the goal is to safeguard the health of residents and prevent outbreaks of sanitation-related diseases.
“This is just to showcase that we have resumed house-to-house inspections. Our mission is to ensure compounds are kept clean, gutters are desilted, and waste is properly managed. The health of one is the health of all,” an ASEPA health officer remarked during the exercise.

The Abia State Government has urged residents to embrace the campaign by maintaining clean surroundings, paying their sanitation fees, and cooperating with inspection teams. Authorities warned that defaulters who fail to comply with abatement notices risk facing stiffer penalties in line with state environmental laws.
