An Abuja-based hospital has introduced a new minimally invasive laser treatment for enlarged prostate, offering patients an alternative to conventional surgery that involves no external incisions and allows many to return home on the same day.
The procedure, known as Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), uses advanced laser technology to remove excess prostate tissue that obstructs urine flow in men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate.
Medical experts say the laser procedure is particularly beneficial for men experiencing frequent urination, difficulty passing urine, weak urine flow, and other symptoms associated with prostate enlargement.
Unlike traditional open surgery, the procedure is performed through the urinary tract using specialised instruments and a laser fibre, significantly reducing recovery time and lowering the risk of complications. Many patients can return home within hours of the operation or after a brief period of observation, depending on their condition.
Healthcare professionals have described the innovation as a significant advancement in urological care in Nigeria, noting that the availability of modern laser treatment options could improve outcomes for patients and reduce the burden associated with conventional surgical procedures.
The development also reflects growing investments in specialised medical services and advanced healthcare technologies aimed at expanding treatment options and improving patient care across the country.
