After receiving multiple petitions from residents of the Ohuhu clan in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia state about the huge piles of refuse left unattended along the main access road to the community, the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) through the Deputy general manager Umuahia zone led by Catechist Ambrose Jonah has taken action to resolve the matter.

The waste, which had long disfigured the environment and posed major health and security risks, became even more troubling when residents abandoned the tarred road due to worsening gully erosion. This neglect not only deepened environmental damage but also provided cover for criminal elements, who in the past disguised as herdsmen allegedly used the valley to ambush and rob unsuspecting residents and motorists.
In response to the complaints, ASEPA officials, led by Deputy General Manager Umuahia zone Catechist Ambrose Jonah, stormed the site with he’s team and launched an immediate cleanup operation. The initiative seeks to restore safety, cleanliness, and environmental dignity to Ohuhu and neighboring areas.

ASEPA’s General Manager, Mazi Ogbonnia Okereke, has also reaffirmed the agency’s strong commitment to effective waste management and sustainable environmental practices across the state. He assured residents that ASEPA would continue to clear refuse promptly, discourage indiscriminate dumping, and keep Abia communities safe, clean, and healthy.
He further reminded residents of ASEPA’s partnership with Bremsoft, the state’s revenue collection agency, emphasizing that prompt payment of sanitation fees is vital for sustaining waste management efforts.

“Keeping Abia clean is a collective responsibility, While government is playing its role, residents must also support by paying their sanitation fees and avoiding indiscriminate disposal of refuse.” he stated
During a recent meeting with the President-Generals of different communities in Umuahia North with the ASEPA DGM Umuahia zone, ASEPA leaders and community representatives renewed their pledge to work together in maintaining a safe and hygienic environment.

With this fresh intervention, the agency is urging all Abians to collaborate in building a cleaner and healthier state.
