In a renewed drive to sustain environmental cleanliness and discourage indiscriminate waste disposal across Aba, the Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Aba Zone Elder Okezie Ezengwa, has issued a stern warning to residents, particularly those living around identified waste flashpoints.
Speaking during a routine inspection of major cleanup zones, Elder Ezengwa expressed deep concern over the continued illegal dumping of refuse in areas such as Obikabia, Zerock, Umuafor, Osusu, Abayi, and Umuokahia.
According to him, despite ASEPA’s relentless efforts to rid Aba of filth, some residents persist in sabotaging the progress with indiscriminate and careless waste disposal practices.
“These flashpoints have become a recurring challenge to the agency, the height of indiscriminate dumping, especially on major roads and in open drainages during rainfall, is unacceptable and must stop immediately,” he said
One particularly disturbing trend, the ASEPA Aba zone boss noted, is the disposal of refuse into gutters along Umuoba Road, especially during rainfall. Elder Ezengwa stressed that such actions not only clog the city’s drainage systems but also worsen flooding and environmental degradation.
“Let it be known that moving forward, the ASEPA Monitoring and Compliance Team will be fully mobilized to track and apprehend any individual or group caught defiling these areas, Defaulters will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law” he warned.
Elder Ezengwa also praised the efforts of sanitation workers and Aba residents who have supported the cleaning of Aba so far, noting that ASEPA is committed to maintaining a healthier and more sustainable urban environment in Aba.
The agency is now calling on community leaders, market unions, Lanlords, Pastors and Royal fathers and residents to join hands in sensitizing their neighbors against irresponsible waste disposal. The public is also encouraged to make use of designated dump sites and observe waste collection schedules as stipulated by ASEPA.
“Aba belongs to all of us, Keeping it clean is not the sole responsibility of the government but a civic duty we all share. Let’s not undo the progress we've made” Elder Ezengwa emphasized
With ASEPA’s intensified monitoring and enforcement measures now in motion, the message is clear: the era of unchecked dumping of waste in Aba is over.
